Voiding dysfunction is a general term used to describe the condition in which there is a lack of coordination between the bladder muscle (detrusor) and the urethra. During normal urination, the pelvic floor muscles relax and open when the bladder muscle contracts, allowing urine to pass out of the body freely. In those with voiding dysfunction, the pelvic floor muscles do not relax appropriately when the bladder muscle contracts, making it difficult for urine to pass.Â
The main symptoms of male voiding dysfunction include frequency of urination and incomplete emptying of the bladder. There are also often obstructive causes in men which leads to voiding symptoms such as urinary hesitancy, difficulty emptying the bladder or dribbling urine after urination is complete. Â
