Perkin Center for Heart Failure

The Perkin Center for Heart Failure at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ was established to provide the most advanced care to patients suffering from heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Our specialists offer advanced, comprehensive treatments—making it possible to slow, and even stop, the disease’s progression.

Our Services

Our center provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with heart failure—ranging from early diagnosis to advanced, life-sustaining therapies. When hospitalization is required, our team delivers expert inpatient care tailored to each patient’s clinical needs.

Inpatient Treatment

In some cases, inpatient care includes advanced or invasive monitoring to confirm the diagnosis and guide the most effective treatment strategies for heart failure management.

For patients who are critically ill or have advanced disease, our inpatient services include:

    • Evaluation for advanced therapies, including mechanical circulatory support and heart transplantation.
    • Specialized inpatient consultations for complex heart failure, including SHOCK team activation; decompensated valvular heart disease with collaborative heart team assessment for structural or surgical interventions; newly diagnosed or worsening pulmonary hypertension; perioperative management; and cardiac obstetrical care.
    • Temporary mechanical circulatory support, including ventricular assist devices and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
    • End-of-life and palliative care, focused on symptom relief, comfort, and quality of life for patients with refractory symptoms and limited life expectancy.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing

To better understand the cause of exercise intolerance and identify patients most at need for more aggressive interventions for advanced heart failure or pulmonary hypertension our center offers cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Before and after a cardiopulmonary exercise test, a lung function test is performed. During the test, you will exercise using either a treadmill or stationary bicycle. As you exercise a heart rate monitor evaluates your heart rate and rhythm and a mask records your oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in each breath. Blood oxygen levels and blood pressure are also monitored throughout the test.

Heart Transplantation

Final therapy for patients who suffer from end stage heart failure in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Ventricular Device Therapy

In some cases, patients need assistance for their heart to pump adequate blood. This can occur because of advanced heart failure or, occasionally, after a heart attack or open-heart surgery. Our Center provides expert care in implanting and managing durable left  ventricular assist device (LVAD) support.

Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension (Groups 1-5) and right-sided heart failure.

Outpatient Management

Our center offers a variety of services to help our patients improve their quality of life. These services include intensive nutritional/dietary counseling, as well as weekly telephone calls with a nurse practitioner trained in heart failure management.

Clinical Trials

In addition to delivering exceptional clinical care, our physicians play a leading role in premiere research. Our patients have the opportunity to participate in the many clinical trials at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, as well as ongoing original research.
