is a genetic disease caused by the thickening of the heart muscle (hypertrophy) leading to scarring between cells and a decreased ability for the heart to pump blood. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is either characterized as obstructive or nonobstructive.
In obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the heart muscle becomes so thick it bulges out into the lower heart chambers (ventricles) whereas as in nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the heart muscle is thickened, but not to the extent in which it crowds the lower heart chambers.
Some symptoms of HCM may include shortness of breath with activity, chest discomfort, heart palpitations, abnormal heart rhythms, including and , syncope, and dizziness.

Our staff is here to help coordinate your care. They will provide you with information on our physicians, their areas of expertise and help arrange for your visit and other testing when appropriate.
To prepare for your appointment, please ensure to bring the most recent reports (if available) of your echocardiogram, cardiac MRI, ambulatory holter monitor, stress echocardiogram, and other cardiac testing. If possible, it is best to also bring a CD containing images of your most recent echocardiogram. If you have a family history of HCM, please bring details of this history (who has been diagnosed, their clinical trajectory, and the results of any genetic testing).
Please arrive on time for your scheduled appointment and check-in at the front desk. Our front-desk staff may need you to verify certain demographic information, insurance data and will require your signature on certain privacy notification and release forms. At this time, we also will ask you to pay any co-payment if applicable.
Once in the exam room, our clinical technicians will take your blood pressure, weight, and review with you your medication list. You may be reffered for an EKG. Your doctor will evaluate your medical history, any prior test results, and conduct a physical exam. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and recommend a treatment plan and possible additional testing which can be scheduled upon your check out. We encourage you to ask questions – you are often the key to your cardiovascular health.
We also have an excellent staff of nurse practitioners, registered nurses, clinical technicians and patient coordinators who are here to make your visit as comfortable as possible and to help you with any questions or concerns that you may have.
By Subway: Take the Q train to 72nd Street and walk two blocks east to York Avenue.
By Cross Town Bus: Take the M31 to the East 69th Street stop, directly in front of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. The M31 operates north and south on York Avenue, and across town on 57th Street. Cross-town buses M30, M66, and M72 allow you to transfer to the M31 at York Avenue.
By Uptown and Downtown Bus: Take the M15 bus which travels uptown along 1st Avenue and downtown on 2nd Avenue. Exit at 68th Street. Either transfer to the M66 line eastbound to York Avenue and 68th Street, or walk 1 or 2 blocks east to the hospital.
From Port Authority Terminal: Take the #10 bus on 8th Avenue going uptown. Get off at 65th Street. Transfer to the #66 bus going east. Get off at 68th Street and York Avenue.
By Car: Approaching from South of East 68th Street: Take the FDR Drive northbound to the 61st Street exit. Make right onto York Avenue.
