About Gwendolyn Reeve, D.M.D., FACS
My career is grounded in delivering exceptional, patient-centered care across the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. As Vice Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, my primary focus is maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence while advancing complex surgical care within an academic medical center.
I am a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon practicing adult and pediatric surgery, with particular expertise in facial trauma and reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint disorders, and complex dentofacial pathology. I am frequently involved in managing challenging surgical cases that require multidisciplinary coordination, and I take pride in delivering thoughtful, technically precise care tailored to each patient’s needs. My clinical practice reflects a commitment to safety, innovation, and outcomes-driven decision-making.
In parallel, I lead a nationally funded translational research program focused on improving the diagnosis and treatment of orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint disease. As Principal Investigator on multi-million-dollar NIH HEAL R61/R33 awards and recipient of the OMS Foundation Clinical Research Award, my work integrates biologic, regenerative, and imaging-based approaches to address clinically relevant problems. This research is deeply informed by patient care and designed to move discoveries efficiently from the laboratory to the bedside.
While education and mentorship remain important components of my role, I view them as extensions of clinical excellence—ensuring that high standards of care are sustained across teams and future generations of surgeons. I am actively engaged in national service through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and accreditation organizations that shape clinical standards within the specialty.
Through my clinical practice, research leadership, and institutional service, my goal is to advance oral and maxillofacial surgery by delivering outstanding care to patients while contributing to the evolution of the field at a national level.
Gwendolyn Reeve, DMD, FACS is Vice Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry and Program Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. Dr. Reeve is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon practicing the full scope of adult and pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery. Her clinical expertise includes facial trauma and reconstruction, orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery, surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea, craniofacial pathology, and complex dentoalveolar surgery. She also performs office-based oral surgery procedures under intravenous sedation, including dental extractions, dental implants, and biopsies.
Dr. Reeve completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where she served as Chief Resident, and her general dentistry residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Reeve leads a highly active translational and clinical research program focused on TMJ disorders, orofacial pain, regenerative medicine, and imaging biomarkers. She is Principal Investigator of a multi-million-dollar NIH HEAL R61/R33 grant investigating photobiomodulation for quantitative assessment of myofascial pain, as well as multiple industry- and foundation-funded studies. She has led multicenter clinical trials evaluating botulinum toxin for myofascial pain disorders and cannabinoids (CBD) for TMJ-related pain. Additional research interests include stem cell biology of the TMJ, synovial biomarkers predicting outcomes of TMJ arthroscopy, craniofacial implant design, and the oral biology of electronic cigarette use. Her work is highly collaborative and spans partnerships with Otolaryngology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neuroradiology, and Genetic Medicine.
Dr. Reeve is Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
