Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide comprehensive, compassionate, and specialized care for women with gastrointestinal and liver conditions during preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum. We strive to optimize maternal and fetal health by integrating expert medical care, research, and patient-centered support across all stages of reproductive health.

About the GAL-WELL Program:

Gastrointestinal (GI) and liver-related conditions significantly impact women’s overall wellness, particularly during key events along the reproductive life span, including pre-conception, during fertility treatments and pregnancy, and post-partum. Proper treatment with a team of specialists can improve the course of these conditions and support healthy pregnancies.

To meet the complex needs of our female patients with GI and liver disease, we have brought together a multidisciplinary team of experts on key issues that impact pregnancy, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and other small bowel and nutritional disorders. We have developed an integrated practice through close collaboration with obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, nutrition specialists, and reproductive endocrinologists to deliver expert care to women with new or longstanding GI or liver concerns to improve wellness and allow women to lead fulfilling lives.

Conditions We Address in Pre-Conception, During Pregnancy and Post-Partum:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)/Immune-Mediated Disorders

  • Crohn's disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Microscopic colitis
  • Pouchitis
  • Anal fistulas

Liver Disorders

  • Liver-related pregnancy conditions (including intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, AFLP and HELLP)
  • Fatty Liver Disease (MASLD) in women
  • Elevated liver tests in pregnancy
  • Viral Hepatitis (hepatitis B, C and Delta)
  • Cirrhosis and related complications
  • Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)

Digestive Diseases

  • Celiac Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Small Bowel and Nutritional Disorders (including inadequate or excess weight gain)

Additionally, although digestive symptoms including reflux, bloating and abdominal pain are common during fertility treatments and pregnancy, these may also indicate a more serious problem, which we can help diagnose and manage.

Meet the GAL-WELL Program Co-Directors:

Dr. Tatyana Kushner is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, with a joint appointment in the Division of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She has expertise in providing care to women with the full spectrum of liver disease, including viral hepatitis (hepatitis B, C, D) particularly during pregnancy and postpartum, metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) (formerly known as fatty liver), autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases including PBC and PSC, and cirrhosis. She has a particular focus on optimizing care in women with a current or prior history of liver conditions complicating pregnancy including intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), HELLP syndrome and Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy (AFLP).

Dr. Laura Sahyoun is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. Her goal is to help women with IBD feel supported, informed, and empowered in their care.

She focuses on women’s health, supporting patients with IBD through every stage of life—family planning, pregnancy, and postpartum care. Dr. Sahyoun works closely with specialists in maternal-fetal medicine, colorectal surgery, and reproductive endocrinology to provide personalized, team-based care. She also uses advanced tools like intestinal ultrasound to non-invasively monitor IBD.
